1. After disrupting the telecom sector with its free offers and hyper-competitive tariffs, Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd plans to create its own cyptocurrency, JioCoin.
With Mukesh Ambani’s elder son Akash Ambani leading the JioCoin project, Reliance Jio plans to build a 50-member team of young professionals to work on blockchain technology, which can also be used to develop applications such as smart contracts and supply chain management logistics.
“The company plans to hire 50 young professionals with average age of 25 years for Akash Ambani to lead. There are multiple applications of blockchain (for the company). The team would work on various blockchain products,” a person familiar with the development said on condition of anonymity.
Blockchain is a digital ledger for storing data including, but not limited to, financial transactions. In simple terms, blockchain decentralizes information without it being copied. The information is held on blockchain through a shared database which can be accessed on a real-time basis. This database is not stored on physical servers but on the cloud, which makes it easy to store unlimited data.
The most popular application of the technology has undoubtedly been cryptocurrency, and Reliance Jio also plans to create its own version called JioCoin.
“One (application) is cryptocurrency. We can deploy smart contracts. It can be used in supply chain management logistics. Loyalty points could altogether be based on JioCoin,” the person cited above said, adding that all of this was “in proposal stage”.
An email sent to Reliance Jio seeking a response remained unanswered till press time.
“Reliance Jio also aspires to get into Internet of Things (IoT). Blockchain technology would come in handy there,” the person said.
IoT is a network of devices such as smartphones, wearable devices, home appliances and vehicles, connected to the internet, which enables these objects to connect and exchange data. Experts have also pointed out that blockchain could potentially address security risks to IoT as it provides a shield against data tampering by labelling each block of data.
Significantly, the Indian government has cautioned against cryptocurrencies, stating that virtual currencies were not backed by assets and posed risks such as money laundering. On 2 January, finance minister Arun Jaitley told the Rajya Sabha that the government was still studying the issue.
“A committee under the chairmanship of secretary, department of economic affairs, is deliberating over all issues related to cryptocurrencies to propose specific actions to be taken,” Jaitley said, adding that the government does not consider cryptocurrencies to be legal tender.
Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies have come under the scanner of governments across the world as their soaring prices attracted speculators and unsophisticated retail investors in droves. On Thursday, Bitcoin dropped as much as 12% to $12,801, its lowest since Christmas day, as South Korea’s justice minister reiterated his proposal to ban local cryptocurrency exchanges.
2. OFFICIAL: No Cryptocurrency Trading Ban in South Korea, Government Says : -
The Blue House, the executive office and official residence of the South Korean President, has announced that there will be no cryptocurrency trading ban in the short-term.
No ban, all FUD
The South Korean government’s official announcement came after a massive backlash and criticism against the Ministry of Justice, which independently announced its plans of banning cryptocurrency trading. The Ministry did this without the consent of the Ministry of Strategy and Justice and other government agencies involved in the South Korean cryptocurrency regulation task force.
According to the Blue House, more than 60,000 citizens voted in a petition to fire the head of the Ministry of Justice Park Sang-ki, who released a premature statement earlier today, on January 11, that the government will implement a policy to shut down cryptocurrency trading.
Almost immediately after Minister Park released his statement, the Ministry of Strategy and Finance emphasized that it does not support or agree with the decision of the Ministry of Justice to ban cryptocurrency trading. It also added that the Ministry of Strategy and Finance only found out about the statement of Minister Park through media reports, and the decision to ban cryptocurrency trading was not agreed upon by the task force.

The global remittance market is a big business. In 2016, remitters sent nearly $600 billion in cross-border payments to help support family members living in their home countries or to settle transactions with business partners.
Money transfer companies allow people to send cross-border payments. Unfortunately, the current model requires money transfer companies to use pre-funded accounts across the globe to source liquidity for these payments. The process makes payments costly and slow, which causes headaches for both the companies and their customers.
To allow their customers to send and complete cross-border payments quicker and cheaper, MoneyGram — one of the world’s largest money transfer companies — will use XRP in their payment flows.
The use of XRP allows MoneyGram to solve the age-old liquidity issue most financial institutions face while saving time and money. Additionally, customers will have the ability to send funds real time, with transparency and certainty.
XRP, xRapid help source on-demand liquidity
MoneyGram will access and use XRP, the native digital asset of the XRP Ledger, in their payment flows through xRapid, Ripple’s on-demand liquidity product.
Here’s how it works: xRapid enables real-time foreign exchange (FX) settlement through XRP, which gives financial institutions the ability to unlock liquidity and access multiple corridors with one pre-funded originating account.
What’s more, financial institutions will be able to send on-demand payments, reduce FX costs and fees, and customers will receive real-time insight into the status of their payments.
“Ripple is at the forefront of blockchain technology and we look forward to piloting xRapid,” said Alex Holmes, chief executive officer of MoneyGram, in a press release. “We’re hopeful it will increase efficiency and improve services to MoneyGram’s customers.”
Ripple strives to improve cross-border payments
Ripple is focused on fixing the inefficiencies and problems that exist in cross-border payments, regardless of whether those payments originate with a bank, corporate or another financial institution.
“The payments problem doesn’t just affect banks, it also affects companies like MoneyGram, which help people get money to the ones they care about,” said Brad Garlinghouse, CEO of Ripple. “By using a digital asset like XRP that settles in three seconds or less, our clients can move money as quickly as information.”

Blockchain-based payments gateway Ripple announced a new partnership with payment service MoneyGram today, Jan. 11.
In a blog post today, Ripple confirmed that MoneyGram would integrate Ripple’s XRP altcoin into its payment system. The integration, according to Ripple, “allows MoneyGram to solve the age-old liquidity issue most financial institutions face.”
Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse commented in company’s blog post announcing the partnership:
“The payments problem doesn’t just affect banks; it also affects companies like MoneyGram, which help people get money to the ones they care about.
By using a digital asset like XRP that settles in three seconds or less, our clients can move money as quickly as information.”

Given Ripple’s market value in early January, the company’s chairman, Chris Larsen, was then reported to have accrued personal wealth to rival Warren Buffett and Bill Gates due to his 37 percent stake.
Ripple has unveiled several partnership deals in recent weeks, and in the first week of 2018, the value of XRP skyrocketed to highs barely imaginable just months ago.
While the rate of appreciation drew no shortage of warnings and criticism, the refusal of Coinbase to add the altcoin reportedly precipitated a 30 percent downturn last week, something the latest news appears to be changing.

सैटेलाइट सीरीज का हिस्सा
जीसैट-11 सैटेलाइट इसरो के इंटरनेट बेस्ड सैटेलाइट सीरीज का हिस्सा है. इसका मकसद इंटरनेट स्पीड को बढ़ाना है. इस मिशन के तहत अंतरिक्ष में 18 महीने में तीन सैटेलाइट भेजे जाने हैं. पहला सैटेलाइट जीसैट-19 जून 2017 में भेजा गया था. जीसैट-11 को इसी महीने भेजा जाएगा. तीसरा सैटेलाइट जीसैट-20 को साल के आखिर तक भेजने की योजना है.

हाईइंटरनेट स्पीड के लिए जीसैट-11 से बेहतर इंटरनेट स्पीड मिलेगी. कनेक्टिवटी सस्ती होगी और पूरे देश में इसका एक्सेस मिल सकेगा. साथ ही इसके तहत बिना डिश लगाए टीवी प्रोग्राम देखे जा सकेंगे. जीसैट-11 से 70 जीबी/सेकंड की हाईस्पीड मिलेगी. साइबर सुरक्षा मजबूत होगी और इससे एक नया सुरक्षा कवच मिलेगा. भारत का बैंकिंग सिस्टम भी मजबूत होगा.
क्या है जीसैट-11
जीसैट-11 को जनवरी 2018 में लॉन्च किया जाना है. इसकी कुल लागत 1117 करोड़ रुपए है. इसका वजन 5.6 टन है. यह सैटेलाइट जीसैट-19 से भी ज्यादा ताकतवर है. इससे पूरे भारत में 13 जीबी/सेकंड की इंटरनेट स्पीड मिलेगी. पहली बार भारत को अपना सैटेलाइट बेस्ड इंटरनेट मिलेगा.

Jio revises all 1GB per day tariff plans: Here's what it offered and what has changed. Jio 2018 offer Rs 50 off and 50% more Data Benefits.
eliance Jio seems to be on a roll. The telecom operator recently launched two new prepaid plans worth Rs 199 and Rs 299. The company now has some more surprises in stock -- and this is a part of its Happy New Year plans for 2018. Jio aims to bring "2018 will bring unprecedented value to all Jio customers" and on account of that, the telco has now revised all its prepaid plans that currently offer 1GB data per day. Jio has updated the plans in a way to offer either 50 per cent more data or cut down the tariff price by Rs 50. The newly updated plans will be available to the customers from Tuesday, i.e January 9, 2018, onwards.
Reliance Jio has updated all its existing 1GB/day packs with either of the 2 additional options -- 50 per cent more data or Rs 50 discount on the price plans. After the update -- which will be applicable only post Jan 9 - that is Tuesday, the Rs 149 plan -- according to Jio -- will be the lowest ever tariff in the industry, on the other hand, Rs 399 plan will provide 20 per cent additional data with enhanced validity of 2 additional weeks, increasing the current validity from 70 to 84 days.
Let's take a detailed look at the newly updated plans, on what it offered and what it provides now, after the revision. Note: It is important to note that all these plans will be only available to Jio Prime members.
Below are the plans, which sees a tariff price cut by Rs 50.
--Rs 199 changes to Rs 149: The Rs 199 prepaid plan gets a price cut by Rs 50 and will be available at Rs 149. This means the services that Jio offered at under Rs 199 will now be available at a cheaper price of Rs 149. Under the plan, customers will get 28GB data with 28 days validity.
--Rs 399 changes to Rs 349: The services that Jio offered under Rs 399 will now be available at Rs 349. Under the plan, Jio offers 70GB data with 70 days validity.
--Rs 459 changes to Rs 399: The existing Rs 459 gets a price cut of Rs 50 and the services that Jio offered under the plan will now be available at Rs 399. Under the plan, Jio will offer 84GB of data for 84 days.
--Rs 499 changes to Rs 449: Currently, under the Rs 499 plan, Jio users get 91GB of 4G data for 91 days. The same service will now - after the plans get updated - post-Jan 9 -- be available at Rs 50 cheaper price of Rs 449.
Note: After the update, the most popular Rs 399 Jio plan which earlier offered 70GB data with 70 days validity, will offer 84GB of data for 84 days.

Additionally, Jio has also introduced a couple of 1.5 GB/day packs. What Jio has basically done is - it has revamped its existing Rs 198, Rs 398, Rs 448 and Rs 498 plans to offer 50 per cent more data at the same price. These plans currently offer 1GB of data per day, but after the revision, it will offer 1.5GB of data daily at the same price.
Let's take a detailed look at the plans:
--Rs 198: Under this plan, Jio currently offers 28GB of 4G data for 28days, but post-Jan 9 - after Jio updates the plans - the plan will offer 42GB of data for the same duration - 28 days. Earlier Jio offered 1GB daily FUP under the plan, but after the revision, it will offer 1.5GB data.
--Rs 398: The Rs 398 plan now offers 70GB of data for 70 days, but after the update, it will offer 105GB data for 70 days validity with a daily data limit of 1.5GB.
--Rs 448: Jio under the Rs 448 plan currently offers 84GB of data for 84 days with a daily limit of 1GB. After the revision, consumers will get 126GB data with a daily FUP limit of 1.5GB of data for the same duration of 84 days.
--Rs 498: Under this plan, Jio now offers 91GB of data for 91 days with a daily data limit of 1GB. But, after the update, under the Rs 498 plan, Jio will offer 136GB of data with a daily limit of 1.5GB for 91 days.
Apart from the change in the data part, other benefits will remain the same. It will offer unlimited incoming and outgoing calls through over VoLTE, unlimited messages and free roaming in India.

With Ripple's XRP coin hitting a high of $3.84, the company's co-founder and executive chairman, Chris Larsen, is now worth about $59.9 billion on paper.
That puts Larsen just ahead of Larry Ellison, who ranks fifth on the Forbes 400 list with a worth of $58.4 billion, and ahead of Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, who rank eighth and 10th on the list, respectively.
Larsen has 5.19 billion of XRP and a 17 percent stake in Ripple, according to Forbes, citing sources at the start-up.

Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin rank eighth and 10th on the list, respectively.
Ripple did not immediately respond to a CNBC request for comment.
Its XRP coin soared 35,500 percent to $2.30 last year, far outpacing bitcoin's and ethereum's gains. The company owns 61.3 billion of the 100 billion XRP coins in existence, giving Ripple a market value of nearly $235.4 billion Thursday.
The San Francisco-based start-up is using blockchain technology to develop a payments network that more than 100 financial institutions are using, according to the company. Ripple's website also says that the XRP coin has a four-second settlement time, versus more than two minutes for ethereum and over an hour for bitcoin.
Cryptocurrency founders can often hold large amounts of the digital coins they create. The anonymous bitcoin founder known as "Satoshi Nakamoto" has 980,000 bitcoins, or about 4.7 percent of all bitcoins that will ever exist, based on widely accepted analysis by Sergio Demian Lerner.
With bitcoin near $15,000 Thursday, Nakamoto's share is worth just $14.7 billion.
